Lewis Van Vleet Teams Up With Josephine County
LVVi was chosen as part of the Facilities Master Planning Services Team for the Josephine County Fairgrounds

Grants Pass, OR – Lewis & Van Vleet has been chosen as part of the architectural, engineering and master planning services team for re-development of the Josephine County Fairgrounds and surrounding area improvements. Left relatively untouched since it was first built in 1953, the Josephine County Fairgrounds is the largest event center in the county and hosts multiple community and private events throughout the year. The buildings on site can hold anywhere from 10 – 1,000 people in addition to a grandstand area that can hold up to 2,500 people. Comprised of over 50-acres, the fairgrounds are home to the annual Josephine County Fair and has over 40 RV hookups, long term or overnight boarding stalls, and is the home base for multiple community groups.

In cooperation with PLACE Architects of Portland and Salem based Nathan Good Architects, LVVi was part of the winning proposal team. Immediate plans include the redesign and renovation of the horse racing track infield and architectural improvements to the grandstand and off-track betting areas typically used for their annual Grants Pass Downs Horse Racing events amongst others. A master plan is being developed as part of a larger effort to redevelop the fairground’s common areas and a potential land swap is being negotiated to improve overall community use. In addition to their 2,500 person grandstand arena, a band shell will be added where artists can perform to the backdrop of the iconic Rogue River. The fairgrounds will also get a new handicap viewing area, updated bathrooms, roofing, walkways, and railing in addition to their other major improvements.

Funding for these major projects has been a group effort between the Fairgrounds and the local community. The Grants Pass Rotary Club awarded the fairgrounds an estimated $200,000 of the $500,000 needed to complete the project. In addition to The Rotary Club and other private donations, Love Abounds, a community-based foundation started by Dutch Bros. Coffee, donated the funds needed to add a soccer field to the inside of the horse racing track. With renovations being funded by donations and grants that the fairgrounds applies for, the redesign and renovation are expected to take about 2 years total and is projected to wrap up in 2020.

LVVi is proud to be part of this team and looks forward to working with A/E professionals, county officials and local community members in creating a year-round gathering point for the Rogue Valley. LVVi’s managing partner, Scott DeBo, is a graduate of Grants Pass High School. He is excited by the prospect of working with the local community and its members in developing something special that generations of local residents can enjoy.
