National University Singapore wins International Air Law Moot Court Competition

The 10th edition of Leiden-Sarin International Air Law Moot Court Competition was held in Chandigarh, India this year from 5-7 April 2019 at the Army Institute of Law. Eighteen teams from different law school universities from 11 countries participated in this competition with 50 leading aviation law experts from 40 countries judged the competition.

The team from the National University of Singapore won the 10th 10th Leiden Sarin International Air Law Moot Court competition which concluded here at the Army Institute of Law, Mohali, India, today.

V.Santhosh, Liew Zhi Hao, and Carina Tay of Singapore were joyous after winning the moot court competition defeating their close competitors from the Leiden University of The Netherlands, giving the judges too a tough time to decide about the winners.

The finals of the event were judged by Justice Mahesh Grover, Judge, Punjab & Haryana High Court; Jiefang Huang, Director, Legal Affairs and Externa Relations Bureau, International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and Prof. Dr. Regula Dettling-Ott, University of Bern in Switzerland.

Justice (retd) S.S. Sodhi, former chief justice of Allahabad High Court, and President of the Sarin Memorial Legal Aid Foundation, congratulated the winners and the participating 18 teams from 11 countries.

Besides the winning trophy, the winners from Singapore also received a letter of offer for internship in the UN body, International Civil Aviation Organisation, from Director Jiefang Huang on the spot.

Prof. Dr. Pablo Mendes De Leon, Director, International Institute of Air and Space Law of Leiden University commended the contribution of Sarin Memorial Legal Aid Foundation for making the competition memorable for each participants and the 50 members international jury from 40 countries, which had congregated in Chandigarh.

He recalled the tenets of the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation which celebrates its 75th anniversary which was to promote friendship and better understanding among nations of the world, which, Dr Pablo said has been fulfilled through this international air law moot court competition.

The teams had come from Canada, China, France, Hong Kong, Germany, The Netherlands, Poland, Russia, and Singapore, besides India, for participation.

Every year the  international moot court competition is organised by Sarin Memorial Legal Aid Foundation and Leiden University of The Netherlands in a different location and it has travelled from Dubai (2011), Istanbul (2011), Abu Dhabi (2013), Bucharest (2014), Beijing, China (2015), Jakarta, Indonesia (2016), Malta (2017), Seoul, South Korea (2018), and now with India edition over this year, the next year’s competition shall be held in Shenghai, informed M.L.
