Smoking, Drinking may be a Vicious Cycle in Addiction, Says Chapters Capistrano

People who smoke may be more prone to alcohol dependence than those who don’t, cautions Chapters Capistrano. This can make rehab an ideal time to quit both.

For some, smoking and drinking seem to go hand-in-hand, and emerging research shows that the effects of nicotine could play an important role. According to an article on Medical Xpress, “smokers have a five to ten times greater risk of developing alcohol dependence than nonsmokers.” Chapters Capistrano has released a statement to the press regarding this connection and the benefit of quitting both addictions together.

“Both nicotine and alcohol have damaging effects on the body and mind and from this study we see that their use is intricately intertwined with addiction,” says Mike Shea, founder of the luxury drug and alcohol rehab center in Orange County. “Clients may be trying to do everything right in managing alcoholism, but by continuing to smoke, this could hamper their efforts without their realizing it. Rehab can be the ideal opportunity to not only quit drinking, but to stop smoking as well.”

Scientists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have been conducting research using rats but believe these results would be similar in humans. After evaluating how much alcohol rats would drink on their own without any influence, they were able to determine a baseline. This was equivalent to a human drinking one to two beers. Alcohol vapor was then used to create an alcohol dependence in one group of rats but no nicotine was involved. It took about two months for the dependence to develop. In the second group, both nicotine and alcohol vapor were introduced to the rats and their dependence developed in only about three weeks.

Another interesting aspect was when quinine was added to the alcohol to make it more bitter, many of the rats consumed less. But the rats exposed to nicotine continued to drink. According to the study, “This indicated that their behavior was compulsive, much like alcoholism in humans.” Nicotine and alcohol were found to work together in affecting how the brain’s reward system operates.

“In the supportive environment of rehab, clients are already safely detoxing their body from alcohol, so it would make sense to quit smoking as well,” says Shea. “This is one more step in improving their wellbeing and creating healthier routines. Rather than smoking more as a way to try to cope and potentially making recovery more difficult, they can overcome both of these addictions together and develop more effective ways of dealing with stress and challenges.”

The study finds that the impact can work both ways; not only could nicotine increase alcohol consumption, alcohol could also influence smoking. By recognizing these interactions, researchers can work to develop new treatment approaches to help clients deal with both issues. “In the smaller, more personalized setting of luxury rehab like at Chapters Capistrano, clients can focus on overcoming numerous factors that may impact their recovery,” notes Shea. “They can create a customized plan to fit their individual needs and address issues specific to their situation, such as smoking.”
