Narcissism Expert Reveals Growing Up With a Narcissistic Mother

Narcissism expert Wendy Behary interviewed with Kids In The House to explain how a narcissistic mother can affect a child’s development.

With the rise in social media use, narcissism is much more commonly seen throughout our daily lives. Many individuals think of males when it comes to narcissism; however, a growing number of females are being linked to it as well. Narcissism expert Wendy Behary interviewed with Kids In The House to explain how a narcissistic mother can affect a child’s development.

Dr. Behary explained that narcissistic mothers often need to feel like they are in the spotlight. Oftentimes, the mother will put pressure on the child to help her feel important.

“She needs to feel lovable, so instead of more of the energy being placed on making her child feel lovable, it’s the expectation that the child should make her feel good,” said Dr. Behary.

Narcissistic mothers also tend to be more critical on their children especially when it comes to appearance. This can lead to many self-esteem issues for the child.
